NCBI Summary for Glrx5
This gene encodes a mitochondrial protein, which is evolutionarily conserved. It is involved in the biogenesis of iron-sulfur clusters, which are required for normal iron homeostasis. Mutations in the human gene are associated with autosomal recessive pyridoxine-refractory sideroblastic anemia. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]
UniProt Comments for Glrx5
Monothiol glutaredoxin involved in the biogenesis of iron-sulfur clusters (). Involved in protein lipoylation, acting in the pathway that provides an iron-sulfur cluster to lipoate synthase (). Required for normal iron homeostasis (). Required for normal regulation of hemoglobin synthesis by the iron-sulfur protein ACO1 (). May protect cells against apoptosis due to reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress (PubMed:19442627).
Research Articles on Glrx5
1. Study reports a decrease of Grx expression levels in pancreatic islets of diabetic mice which was accompanied by declining insulin secretion, increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production level, and cell cycle alterations. These data demonstrate the essential role of the Grx system for the beta-cell during metabolic stress which may provide a new target for diabetes mellitus type 2 treatment.
