UniProt Comments for Sc5dl
SC5DL: Catalyzes a dehydrogenation to introduce C5-6 double bond into lathosterol. Defects in SC5DL are the cause of lathosterolosis (LATHST). This autosomal recessive disorder is characterized by a complex phenotype, including multiple congenital anomalies, mental retardation, and liver disease. Belongs to the sterol desaturase family.
Protein type: EC 1.14.21.6; Oxidoreductase; Lipid Metabolism - steroid biosynthesis; Membrane protein, integral; Membrane protein, multi-pass
Cellular Component: endoplasmic reticulum; integral to membrane; intracellular membrane-bound organelle; membrane
Molecular Function: C-5 sterol desaturase activity; iron ion binding; oxidoreductase activity
Biological Process: cholesterol biosynthetic process via lathosterol; fatty acid biosynthetic process; lipid metabolic process; steroid biosynthetic process; steroid metabolic process; sterol biosynthetic process
Research Articles on Sc5dl
1. Data suggest that although cholesterol synthesis is impaired in both Dhcr7 mutant and Sc5d(-/-) embryonic brain, synthesis of nonsterol isoprenoids may be increased and thus contribute to Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome and lathosterolosis pathology.
